Lossless & hi-res streaming, explained

“Lossless”, “hi-res”, “24-bit/192 kHz”: what the labels mean, which services offer what, and when you’ll actually hear a difference.

  1. 1

    Lossy, compressed

    Up to 256–320 kbit/s

Throws away audio detail you mostly can’t hear to keep files small. Good on Bluetooth, on the bus, everywhere.

Who offers it: YouTube Music (256 kbit/s), free tiers

  2. 2

    Lossless, CD quality

    16-bit/44.1 kHz

Every bit of the CD master, packed like a zip file. Sounds identical to the CD.

Who offers it: All lossless services

  3. 3

    Lossless, 24-bit/44.1–48 kHz

    Studio bit depth

More headroom in the recording. Spotify Premium tops out at 24-bit/44.1 kHz; Apple Music “Lossless” at 24-bit/48 kHz.

Who offers it: Spotify Premium, Apple Music

  4. 4

    Hi-res lossless

    Up to 24-bit/192 kHz

The studio master at a high sample rate, when the label supplies one. Above 48 kHz you usually need a wired setup or an external DAC.

Who offers it: Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, TIDAL, Qobuz, Deezer

Which service streams what

  • Spotify: Lossless up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC on Premium; free tier up to about 160 kbit/s (128 kbit/s AAC on the web player).
  • Apple Music: Lossless ALAC up to 24-bit/48 kHz, Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz (needs an external DAC above 48 kHz), Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos.
  • YouTube Music: Up to 256 kbit/s AAC/Opus on Premium (128 kbit/s on the free tier); no lossless option.
  • Amazon Music Unlimited: Lossless HD, millions of tracks in Ultra HD, spatial audio in Dolby Atmos and 360 Reality Audio.
  • TIDAL: Lossless and hi-res FLAC, Dolby Atmos.
  • Deezer: FLAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz on compatible tracks for eligible paid subscribers (since Oct 14, 2026; before that 16-bit/44.1 kHz).
  • Qobuz: Lossless FLAC, 24-bit up to 192 kHz.

Will I hear the difference?

Often, no, and that’s fine. Bluetooth headphones re-compress the signal, so most of the lossless benefit disappears on the way to your ears. Spotify itself notes that lossless “doesn’t always translate to a dramatically different listening experience for everyone”, and that your connection, device and the original recording all matter.

Where lossless helps: wired headphones or speakers, a quiet room, and music with a lot of space in it (acoustic, jazz, ambient, classical). Hi-res above 48 kHz on Apple Music needs an external DAC, according to Apple.

Bit depth and sample rate in one paragraph

Bit depth is how finely each moment’s loudness is measured (16-bit for CD, 24-bit for studio masters). Sample rate is how many times per second the sound is measured (44,100 for CD, up to 192,000 for hi-res). Higher numbers mean bigger files and, in the right setup, more of the original detail.

Try it on something calm

Soft, spacious music is the easiest place to hear detail. These Purrple Cat tracks play free here as MP3s at about 190 kbit/s, a handy reference point for the lossy end of the ladder.
